An Infectious Diseases Specialist is a medical doctor/physician with advanced training in diagnosing, treating, and preventing infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. We are referred to several names including ‘ID Physician’, ‘Infection Specialist’, ‘Infectiologist’ or ‘Infection Control Specialist’. Unlike other sub-specialty physicians that manage a particular organ (e.g. heart by a cardiologist), we manage complex or severe infections, particularly those that do not respond to standard antimicrobial therapy. We care for patients with conditions such as sepsis, pneumonia, HIV, hepatitis, bone and joint infections, and post-surgical complications. Infectious Diseases Specialists also provide expertise in antibiotic use, ensuring treatments are both effective and safe, and provided where necessary. In hospitals, we often work closely with other specialists to guide patient care, infection prevention, and outbreak control. Beyond clinical practice, many also contribute to public health, research, and teaching. Please visit here to learn more about infection-related complaints that we manage.
